Math teachers have been enjoying Happy Numbers for years. Now, we’re reaching out with good news for ELA teachers — the long-awaited course on reading for PreK-K students is almost ready to launch. 

We’re confident that the course will win the love of both teachers and students. Just to be sure, we’re making Happy Letters FREE for one year for first-time users.

Happy Letters will launch in March 2023 with the first five letters (M, T, P, N, A). Lessons will include letter recognition, literacy skills, and educational games. More letters and sounds will be added throughout the year to keep your primary students moving toward greater literacy. See the full curriculum here. 

The student journey through Happy Letters begins with mastering letters and their sounds. Students are guided through letter recognition and formation, hearing and making sounds, and applying letter/sound understanding to words — all independently. Happy Letters engages students, so they learn by doing. It supports them when they make errors, so even mistakes become gentle learning opportunities. The result is maximum learning and increased confidence.

Happy Letters is designed to support your small-group ELA instruction by providing a purposeful, yet independent, technology station. The tasks are designed for students to learn from independently and at their own pace, with flexible scaffolding and immediate feedback to each input. Individualized pacing means those who demonstrate mastery progress more quickly, and those who need more instruction receive it. 

Happy Letters supports students by building an interactive dialogue. It responds to students just the way you would: unpacking concepts step-by-step, bringing their attention back to the task when they are unfocused, praising for excellent performance, and cheering up when it gets complicated. All text has a friendly human voice-over to facilitate independence.

Happy Letters is a Common Core and State standards aligned program. Our subject experts have years of experience designing and fine-tuning our math resource, Happy Numbers, based on extensive user testing and feedback. They’ve now applied this knowledge, along with the latest educational research, to make Happy Letters a coherent and effective curriculum supplement. 

Indeed, storytelling is a powerful instrument in a young child's education. Stories and catchy characters can create interest and vivid mental images, another cue for recall. They’re also a great way to provide structure and coherence to the course. 

In the PreK-K program, our main character, Alfy the dog, has had bad luck and turned to the young learners for help. During a journey through a magic world, students help him find and learn about lost letters. Alfy is a good companion on the journey — he guides the students, helps them solve tasks, and explains the rules. While moving through the modules of the course, students encounter additional characters and learn letters and sounds with their help. At the end of a successful journey, students gain access to a marvelous castle, where they meet a wise tortoise who gives a final assignment to review what the students have learned.

It’s crucial for primary students to develop fine motor skills that go beyond the computer screen. Such skills help children use thinner writing materials, like pencils, to circle answers and write letters and words. We’ve saved teachers time by designing printable materials to support the learning students have gained online while building these important fine motor skills. 

The printables are designed for pre-literate students. Every PDF has only one activity and has an illustrated example to make the task simple and clear for kids. They can work independently, which saves time for teachers to focus on small-group instruction.
